Thus, This is one of those stories where "I lived to tell about it, And I'm glad to have done it".
It started off on a very windy day, We're talking 60+mph gusts, the kind of day that nearly knocks me over. I get this smart idea in my head that it would be fun to go to Lake Superior for a swim.
Only I didn't just want to swim, I wanted to take my new kayak out on the pretty waves, They couldn't be more than 4-5 feet, Could they? This is Lake Superior we're talking about... And having lived here as long as I have, You'd have thought I would know better... Nope.
We get out there, The waves are between 10 and I think honestly there were some 15 foot crests out there. Any sane person would've left the kayak in the car if not driven away immediately.. But I didn't do either...
I got the kayak out, Went down to the beach with my brother, stripped down to my swim trunks and went into the water with the kayak, Took a bit to get used to but it was fun, Riding 10 foot waves into shore was like surfing while sitting down...
Now I need to point out, The beach I chose was not all sand, In fact, The last 15 feet or so right up to shoreline was all rocks, As well as about 40-50 feet out into the water... You can see where this is going, Yes?
So I'm out for a while, And a good 200 feet or so down the beach from my brother, and come in for a landing. Problem: My kayak had filled with water from whitecaps crashing over it, I was still bouyant, But severely bogged down and it was hard to manuever the vessel.
I got to the shore, and was about to exit the kayak when a very large wave struck me broadside, Flipped the kayak, and slammed my head under water and into a rock(I assume... I don't remember)
The next thing I know my brother's running up to me saying "Are you alright? Are you alright?" I'd managed to drag myself and the kayak out of the water, Had flipped it over, and was laying down on top of it catching my breath, I don't remember doing any of this. But my response (I think) was along the lines of "Oh yea, You wanna give it a try? It's fun!"
Was the second concussion I ever suffered (to my knowledge) and was a helluva lotta fun in the getting! But take it from me... If you're going to try and do something most people would think twice or even thrice about, Ask yourself whether it's something you'd put someone else through if you had to take responsibility for what happened to them.
But I have to admit, It makes a killer story
I may post more of my "Why the hell did I do that" moments in the near future...
